前置詞を極めろ！
TOEICの問題集をやっているとどうも前置詞が弱い！　随分、以前に買って使った英語の文法書Advanced Grammar in Use With CD ROMをひっぱりだして、再度、勉強を始めた。この際、しっかりとまとめを作ろう。これで前置詞が極められたらいいけど。前置詞と、広辞苑によると「ヨーロッパ後で、名詞・代名詞の前に置いて、その語の同士に対する文法的関係（特に格関係）や意味的関係を表す品詞。時間・空間関係を表す物が多い」とある。日本語の「て、に、を、は」とは違うのだろうか？　少々違う。日本語で「てにをは」はどこでどう使うのか説明するのは、難しいけれど、感覚的にわかる。英語は…。とりあえず、ケンブリッジ大学の文法書でしっかり学ぼう♪

A.between, among
下の例文の中で、場所の前置詞としてbetween と among がどのように使われているかを見てみよう
○ She held the diamond between her thumb and index finger.
○ Kyrgyz is situated between Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east, Uzbekistan to the west, and Tajikistan to the south.
これ、初めて知った。四つの方向についてのときもbetweenっを使えるんだ！
○ He stood among all his relatives in the room and was very relaxed.
○ She eventually found her passport among the photographs in her drawer.

between は個々または分離しているものとして見なす、二人（ふたつ）かそれ以上の人たち（もの）とともに、使う。
among は人々かものを固まりやグループの一部として見るときに使う。「You are among two people」または「You are among two desks」とは言えない。
Amongst はときどき among の代わりに使われる。しかし、もっと文学的な言葉である。

B.between と among は場所の前置詞としてだけに使われるのではない。
ひとつのグループや人やもののいくつものグループに対してなされたり、それらによってなされた何かについて話すとき、between または among を使う。
○ The money is to be divided between/among the organizations in the country.
○ The prize will be shared between/among the first ten runners who finish the race.

しかしながら、単数名詞を使ってグループの個々のメンバーを具体的に述べるとき、among よりも between を使う。
○ The pledge was signed between the Satsuma Clan and the Choshu Clan in 1866.
○ There was a disagreement between Harry, Ron and Hermione.

比較や関係（たとえば、 a difference between や a connection between やa friendship betweenや a link between など)について話すとき、
among ではなく between を使う。
○ What are the difference between softball and baseball?
○ They are wrong to claim that there is a connection between intelligence and sex.

occurring in(ある事柄が生じているとき)や、one/some of（あるものの中のひとつ、またはいくつか） や out of（〜の中で） を意味するとき、
between ではなくamong を使う。
○ The disease has now broken out among the island.(='occurring in')
○ They are among the best soccer players in the world.(='some of')
○ Among many books Haruki Murakami wrote, 'Norwegian Woods' is the most popular.(='out of')

注意；among other things( between other thingsではなく）という表現は、どのように使うのか。
○ Among other things, I enjoy skiing and skating.
○ I later found out that he had been a plumber and a taxi driver, among other things.

C.by, beside, close to, near (to), next (to)
　これらは、すべて、「それほど遠くない」という意味。near (to) または close to のどちらかをしばしば使うことができる。
○ The plant often grows close to/near (to) the foot of the moutains.
○ We used to live close to/ near (to) Kinkakuji temple.

beside/by/next to ある物または人がもう一方の側にいる（ある）ことを言うときに使う。
○ Akira sat beside/ by / next to his mother with his arms crossed.
○ I pressed the switch beside/ by /next to the door but the light in the room wasn't turn on.

next は、続いている物の中で何かが別の物の後から来るときについて言うときに形容詞として使うこともできる。
ある物が、同じ種類の他のいかなる物よりも近いことを意味するとき、next ではなく nearest を使う。
比べてみよう。
○ When Taro arrived, I left the bedroom and went into the next room.(nearest roomではなく）
○ When the rain started, I ran to the nearest house for shelter.(next ではなく）

towns や cities について話すとき、by ではなく near を使う。
○ I first met Saori when she was working on a beach near Suma.
○ They live in a pretty cottage near Shonan in Japan.
