前置詞を極めろ！
TOEICの問題集をやっているとどうも前置詞が弱い！　随分、以前に買って使った英語の文法書Advanced Grammar in Use With CD ROMをひっぱりだして、再度、勉強を始めた。この際、しっかりとまとめを作ろう。これで前置詞が極められたらいいけど。前置詞と、広辞苑によると「ヨーロッパ後で、名詞・代名詞の前に置いて、その語の同士に対する文法的関係（特に格関係）や意味的関係を表す品詞。時間・空間関係を表す物が多い」とある。日本語の「て、に、を、は」とは違うのだろうか？　少々違う。日本語で「てにをは」はどこでどう使うのか説明するのは、難しいけれど、感覚的にわかる。英語は…。とりあえず、ケンブリッジ大学の文法書でしっかり学ぼう♪

A. across, over, along, through
across または overを使うのは、向こう側の位置の事を話すとき、または、橋や道や境界線や、川などの向こう側に達するまでのことを話すときに使う。

○ The taxi came toward them across/over the bridge.
○ Mike lives in the house across/over the road from the mountain.
○ Once she was across/over the border, she knew she would have the doctor's help.

高かったり、その幅よりも高いようなものに向こう側に届くことについて話すとき、across よりもむしろ over を使う。
○ He hurt his knee as he jumped over the wall.
○ The railway goes through a tunnel rather than over the top of the Mt. Ikoma.

平坦な表面または、国や海のようなエリアとして考える何かについて話すとき、over よりむしろ acrossを使う
○ He suddenly saw Aya across the room.
○ The programme was broadcast across Japan.
○ The fingures moved rapidly across the monitor of the computer.

注意；all over とは言うけれど、all across とは普通言わない、そうではなく、right acrossを好む。
○ The disease has now spread all over the country.(or…right across the country.)

続いてくるある種のライン（a path, a road, a river, a bench, a canalなど)について話すとき、along を使う。
○ I'd seen them walking along the road past my shop several times before.
○ They walked along the path until they came to the post office.

平坦な表面やエリアや二次元の空間よりむしろ、取り囲んでいる全ての物を伴った三次元の空間内での動きについて話すとき、強調するために throughを使う。
○ He pushed his way through the crowd of people to get to the celebrity.
○ He enjoyed the peace and quiet as he walked through the woods.

through はしばしばある側からまたは、空間の終点から向こう側への動きを示す。
○ She walked through the forest to get to her parents' house.
○ She spent a lot of her free time walking in the forest. （上の文と比べてみよう）

B.above, over, below, under
ある物がもうひとつの物よりも高い位置にあることについて話すとき、above または over のどちらかを使う。
○ Above/Over the door was a sign saying 'Watch out your head'.
○ Mika had painted thick, dark eyebrows above/over each eye.

しかしながら、ある物が直接にもうひとつの物の真上にないときには、overを使わずに above を使う。下の例文を比べてみよう。
○ The castle sat in the mountain above the village.
○ The passengers couldn't see the sun, as it was right over the plane.(=ちょうど頭上に）

何かが他の何かを覆っていて、その何かはそれに触れていることを言うときや、また平行の動きについて話すときは、above ではなく over を使う。
○ A grey mist hung over the farm.
○ I saw the helicopter fly out over the lake near the fishing boat.

below はabove の反対側、 under は over の反対側。below と under の使い方の違いは above と over の違いと似ている。
○ It's hard to believe that there is a railway line below/under the school.
○ The girl's head was below the level of the counter and the shop assistant didn't notice her.
○ I was so hot, I stood under a cold shower for fifteen minutes.
○ She hid the presents under a tablecloth.(プレゼントとテーブルクロスは接触している）
