Middle-angle |
It was a breathtaking view !! Swinging colorful
lanterns, laughing children, and an insect's
voice..... Suddenly I wandered into a fantasy
world.
Having a stroll around black cherry trees,
I happened to see a group of children chasing
an insect. All of them had vivid colored
lanterns in their hands, most of which were
made by themselves with love and care. Not
only the vivid colors of lanterns, such as
crimson, pink, indigo, green, purple, and
yellow, but also manufacturers' (children's)
names cut out in squared letters pleased
me.
"Does anyone want a grasshopper ?"
One of the children shouted. He seemed to
have found one in a bush. Many children flocked
together for his catch. Without a moment's
hesitation, he chose a girl and handed his
catch to her very carefully.
"Oh ! It's not a grasshopper but a bell
cricket !" she cried with joy. I was
sure this must have been a big surprise for
her made by the boy. Moreover I realized
the lantern held up by him inscribed his
name "Fujio" on her white kimono,
and in the same way the girl's name "Kiyoko"
projected upon his waist. "Fujio"
was green color and "Kiyoko" was
red one. What a beautiful interplay of red
and green !! It was definitely a magic of
light. However it was regretful that none
of the children noticed it.
Fujio, I want you to keep this sort of wit
till you have grown up and whenever you are
depressed at the real world, please remember
what happened today .

When I was wandering near the school playground,
hearing insect's voice, I found a bobbing cluster
of beautiful varicolored lanterns.
About 20 children were hanging their lanterns
in their hands respectively and chasing insects.
Almost all children's lanterns were hand-made
by their own. And each of them had several
colors and elaborate shapes and children's
names which cut out and colored.
One boy found a grasshopper. He shouted 'does
anyone want a grasshopper?' three times.
The boy handed the grasshopper to a girl.
However, it was a bell cricket. Then something
appeared on the girl's breast. It was
the boy's name, 'Fujio' The letters were
green on her white cotton kimono. While the
girl's lantern projected a trembling patch
of red on the boy's waist, the name-'Kiyoko'.
They didn't noticed them.
It is pity for Fujio not to remember the
moment, when his name was written in green
by his beautiful lantern on the girl's breast.

When I was ambling by the upper school playground,
I thought I heard the voice of insect. So
I walked more slowly listening to that voice.
Then I encountered bobbing cluster of beautiful
varicolored lanterns at the base of embankment.
I soon found out it was a group of children
on an insect chase among the bush.
Most of the lanterns were made by children
themselves. They tried hard to make ones
lantern more unique and beautiful than others.
That's why those lanterns were so beautiful.
The children crouched eagerly on the slope
to look for the insect. Suddenly a boy shouted.
"Does anyone want a grasshopper?"
Some children responded quickly to him but
the boy kept asking as if he didn't hear
them until one girl asked for the grasshopper.
He gave it to her. The insect he gave to
her was not a grasshopper but a bell cricket
after all. She overjoyed to get the bell
cricket.
As I watched them, I happened to notice very
interesting phenomenon. The boy's name "Fujio",
which was cut out in squared letters on the
lantern, projected on the girl's breast and
"Kiyoko" the girl's name on the
boy's waist. What a magic of light! It was
such a pity that no one noticed that play
of light.
Though you didn't see the play of the light,
Fujio, I want you to remember what you have
experienced tonight.

While wandering around the campus, I happened
to see a bobbing cluster of beautiful varicolored
lanterns at the base of the embankment. It
was a group of children on an insect chase
among the bushes. There were about twenty
lanterns having elaborate designs made by
the children.
Wide-eyed, I loitered near them and found
that some lanterns have the names of the
children who made them cut out in squared
letters, so that the candle's light seemed
emanate from the form and color of the design
itself.
While the children were looking for insects
eagerly, one boy suddenly straightened up
and shouted.
"Does anyone want a grasshopper?"
A lot of the children looking for insects
came running up to get it. He chose one girl,
and the insect was transferred from his hands
to hers and put into her insect cage. Looking
at it, she was very delighted.
"Oh! It's not a grasshopper. It's a
bell cricket." It was the boy’s wit
in order to please her more when the insect
she thought grasshopper turned out a bell
cricket.
Then I noticed that in the faint greenish
light of his lantern felling on the girl’s
breast, the boy’s name “Fujio” was clearly
projected. The girl’s lantern dangling from
her waist also projected her name “Kiyoko”
on the boy’s waist in the reddish light.
What an impressive play of light! However
neither of them knew it.
I’m thinking of Fujio’s future. The girl
got more wonderful thing than she expected,
but the opposite might happen in the world.
I hope Fujio could find a girl like a true
bell cricket when he becomes a young man.

When I was strolling near the university,
I saw a bobbling cluster of beautiful varicolored
lanterns at the base of the embankment. I
was astonished by the beauty of that fantastic view.
It was a group of children on an insect chase
holding the lanterns, most of which they
had made themselves with love and care. Every
child wanted make the most unusually beautiful
lantern, so they improved the designs and
tried to make a better one each day. The
square lanterns had old-fashioned patterns,
flower shapes and the names of the children
who had made them were cut out to in squared
letters of the syllabary.
A boy suddenly straightened up and shouted,
" Does anyone want a grasshopper?"
Some children came running up, but the boy
called again. Some more children came running
up, but again he called out a third time.
Two or three more children came over and
he chose a girl to give the insect to. The
insect was transferred from his fist to the
girl's thumb and index finger. "Oh,
it's not a grasshopper. It's a bell cricket."
she exclaimed. She was so delighted that
her eyes shone with joy. I finally understood
his action now. He meant to surprise and
please her by giving her the bell cricket
saying, " It's a grasshopper".
Then I caught my breath in surprise. The
boy's lantern inscribed his name "Fujio"
in green on the girl's breast and the girl's
lantern made out her name "Kiyoko"
in red on the boy's waist. Neither of Fujio
nor Kiyoko knew about this chance interplay
of red and green. Even if they remembered
forever what happened tonight, Fujio would
ever know about tonight's play of light.
It's a pity.
Fujio! I want you to have the wit even when
you have become a young man and even if you
do have it, it is difficult to find a true
bell cricket in the world. You might find
a girl like a grasshopper whom you think
is a bell cricket and finally even a true
bell cricket will seem like a grasshopper
to you. If you had have seen tonight's play
of light, it would help remind you that there
is a true bell cricket in the world when
you feel that the world is only full of grasshoppers
in the future.
