Duty was duty

Gregory was a nice guy. However I had to
kill him and hang him from a telegraph pole.
He was a hostage of our army. But he was
a good cook, washed our clothes, drank from
the same canteen, sewed, and so on.
He was talkative. He had a girl friend in
his country. He talked about her a lot and
nobody stopped him to talk.
Even he saved my life caught a scorpion from
my leg.
How cruel I had to kill him!
I couldn't resist the order so I shot him to die.
I had to kill five hostages before him.
But this time was different.
I couldn't hang him from a telegraph pole.
We buried him in a grave.
The headquarter was indifferent what
we did to Gregory.
May be they didn't care whether Gregory was
killed or not.

In wartime everything is unusual. Even human
mentality is not an exception. People can
be cruel to others (enemies) so easily in
such an extraordinary circumstance. It is
unbelievable but you can get used to killing
people without feeling much regret. You know
why ? Because it is the matter of your life
and death. Save your skin or others ?
Gregory.... What a pity and pure fellow !!
He was our hostage and was supposed to be
shot and hanged from a telegraph pole in
compensation for Lieutenant Rafel's execution.
It was an order from Headquarters. Nobody
could defy them and it was I who had to do
the assignment.
Gregory was a strange guy. He never tried
to escape from us although we gave him many
chances. Far from it he saved my life from
scorpion's bite with his bare hand. He was
just like a friend of us. I'm afraid we had
spent too much time together eating from
the same plates and listening to his stories
over and over.
When the day came I wavered for quite some
time between a pure human nature and soldier's
assignment . But I did shoot him finally.
Although I had already killed 5 hostages
by then, it was a really hard task. I decided
not to hang him from a telegraph pole as
Headquarters didn't care about it at any
rate. It was the least I could do for him
as a friend in my mind.

Gregory was our hostage. When Rafael, one
of our men was executed, Headquarters ordered
me to execute him and hang his body from
a telegraph pole as an exemplary punishment.
It was the sixth case for me to execute a
hostage. I got used to it, however, Gregory’s
case was different. We had been eating together
so long and he became our friend. He liked
talking about his girl friend. He cooked,
sew and did a laundry for us. He even helped
my life when a scorpion climbed my leg. He
could have escaped when the sentry fell a
sleep or when we sent him all alone to the
laundry, but he did not.
He believed that we would spare his life,
but when the order came we had no choice.
That was war. At the moment I shot him he
told me “You are kidding, friend! Aren’t
you kidding?” After I squeezed the trigger
many times and emptied the gun, he fell and
grabbed my leg, and died with a terrible
spasm. We decided not to hang him and dug
a grave for him instead. Headquarters didn’t
care to know if he was really killed or hanged.

さなえ |
I was about to execute Gregory, our hostage,
because the enemy had executed our soldier,
Lieutenant Rafel. The order from Headquarters
was clear. Gregory must be executed and be
hanged infront of the people as an exemplary
penalty.
I should not be nervous since it was the
sixth execution for me. But it was not that
easy this time. Because we had built a good
friendship as we ate together and talked
about personal stories. Gregory wasn't a
bad guy after all and we
even liked him. On top of that he liked us,
too.
Whether we liked him or not the order from
Headquarters was absolute and we had no choice.
Under the name of the war, we had to kill
our friend. I couldn't kill him instantly
so I had to empty the barrel. He died with
a terrible spasm.
We dug a grave for poor Gregory instead of
hanging him from a telegraph pole since Headquarters
didn't care to know the hostage's death.
